The Tangra family suicide-murder case has taken a new turn with police revealing that the deaths of two women and a minor girl were planned seven days in advance. Investigators claim that brothers Pranay and Prasun Dey, facing a debt of nearly ₹10 crore, decided to take their own lives along with their families. However, they left two minors out of the plan.
According to the police, the brothers procured a large quantity of sleeping pills and blood pressure medication from multiple pharmacies. On the night of February 17, their minor family member, Priyambada, was allegedly given lassi mixed with the drugs, leading to her death. However, their wives, Sudeshna and Romi, only fell unconscious. The next morning, both women were allegedly murdered. Officials are investigating whether the killings involved external assistance.
Later on February 18, in what police say was a suicide attempt, the two brothers and Pranay’s son Pradeep crashed their car on the bypass. They sustained injuries and were taken to a private hospital, where they are currently under police surveillance. A hospital source stated that while their condition is stable, they remain in the ICCU due to security concerns.
Investigators say the ‘suicide pact’ was discussed around February 10 after Pranay reportedly realized repaying their financial liabilities was impossible. He allegedly informed his younger brother, and both later involved their wives in the decision. “It was decided that six people would consume the sleeping pills together,” a police official said. However, the two minor children were unaware of the plan.
The case is under active investigation, with police examining financial records, forensic evidence, and call data to establish the sequence of events. Authorities are also verifying whether the family had taken loans from informal sources. Officers indicate that Pranay and Prasun may face murder charges following their recovery, depending on further findings.
